Protect
    Internet Explorer Setting Protection
Some bad websites or programs will change your browser settings. They can do a variety of changes, including:
  • Changing your homepage.
  • Adding new items to your Links toolbar.
  • Disabling the "Tools->Internet Options" menu and hiding the "Internet Options" control panel. (This is NASTY!)
  • Changing the animated logo on the right side of the toolbar.
  • Changing the window title.
  • Changing the "Prefixes" that Internet Explorer uses to potentially redirect every site you visit. (This is VERY NASTY!)
  • Adding a special "Style Sheet" every time your browser starts to change how things look.

  • GeekSuperhero can detect and confirm with you if changes have been made to your browser's settings.

    Internet Connection Setting Protection
Some bad websites or programs will change your Internet Connection settings. They can do a variety of changes, including:

  • Changing your Proxy Server settings
  • Setting so your Internet Connection Settings are loaded off a website
  • can change your "Name Server" settings. (This often changes when connecting to a new network, so often the changes are correct. But it is something to watch too.)
  • Change the phone number your modem dials! (This is NASTY!)

  • GeekSuperhero can detect and confirm with you if changes have been made to your Internet Connection settings.

    Startup Protection
Some programs will add themselves to be started whenever Windows starts without asking you. This is especially bad with viruses, Internet worms, or "Trojan" programs that you really don't want running every time you start Windows! But even regular programs will often add themselves to start when Windows starts too.
There are a few things that are very suspicious if they are being started when Windows starts. Geek Superhero will have an extra warning for these items in the Details it shows when a new Startup item is found.
GeekSuperhero can detect when new items are added to run when Windows starts and confirm with you if to keep or reject the changes. This is a great way to detect a variety of bad programs that quietly install themselves. Preventing them from starting when you reboot will help protect you from the bad things they may do.

    Desktop Protection
There are several places where programs will put icons on your computer. On your main Desktop, etc. Most setup programs will ask about adding these icons when you are installing the program, but some don't ask and will just add icons in various places.
When this is turned on, Geek Superhero checks with you to confirm if if you want to keep or reject any new icons that are added to the following places:

  • On the main Windows Desktop.
  • Quick Launch in your Windows Taskbar.
  • In your Windows Taskbar, programs can be added to the top of the Start button menu.

  • GeekSuperhero can detect and confirm with you if new icons appear on your Desktop.

    Suspicious Setting Protection
Windows has many places that a Scoundrel can quietly change to let itself run or do other things. This checks for a variety of these suspicious settings, including:

  • Run a program when you try to start any regular program in Windows.
  • Trying to run a 'dummy' explorer.exe file instead of the real one (explorer.exe does the Taskbar with the Start button, the Desktop, and pretty much everything in Windows.)
  • Changes to your Windows Update location.

  • GeekSuperhero can detect and confirm with you if any of these settings change.

    Favorites Protection
This prompts you when a new Favorite has been added to your Internet Explorer, Favorites menu. It is quite possible the favorite will be something you added yourself, but some programs also put new Favorites for you without asking.
GeekSuperhero can detect and confirm with you when new Favorites are added.

    File Viewer Protection
A File Viewer is the program you have set in Windows to open/play/view a file type. For example an MP3 file would be played by one of many different sound programs.
Often when a competing program installs, it will set itself to be the viewer for a file type. Sometimes they'll ask, but often they'll just change it. Geek Superhero's File Viewer Protection lets you set a list of file types that you want it to protect. If the viewer for one of the protected types ever changes, Geek Superhero will immediately give a message and let you change it back.
The list of types is very simple. Just a list separated by spaces. So something like this:
    MP3 WAV HTML
GeekSuperhero can detect and confirm with you if one of your protected viewers is changed.
